Pod cast submission

Sam and I have finally handed in our pod cast. It has been a long journey with lots of ups and downs and I am relieved that we have finished. having said that, I have thoroughly enjoyed creating this pod cast and I am sad to be finishing this module. I mentioned in my last post that I will be putting up the pod cast and reference list in this post, unfortunately I cannot find a way to upload the animation as it is too big. The video was also to big to just attach it the the post, however I found that if I uploaded it to you tube first and then attached it to this blogg it worked.

Fourth meeting

Sam and I had our fourth meeting on Saturday, and we finalised all of the details on our animation. Before we even started our pod cast we had an idea to do two videos, one explaining why we were influenced by the Botanical Gardens and explaining what sustainable energy is. The second video will be based on science lessons about sustainable energy in the classroom that take an influence from the Botanical Gardens. We did not originally go with this idea as we thought we could not pull it off in the time frame we had, however, we found that we completed the first animation with plenty of time left to complete a second video. So, our pod cast will now consist of two videos which will be posted on here along with a reference list in my next post.  

Third Meeting

After much deliberation Sam and I decided to create an animation about our chosen topic sustainable development, we chose it as we though it was a creative way of putting our idea across. Originally we decided to take our influence from the Science Museum in Cardiff, however after further research we decided it would be a better idea if we took influence from our trip to the National Botanical Gardens, as they are actively seeking to develop ways of using sustainable energy. We have now completed all of our research on sustainable development and sustainable energy and created a script to be recorded and placed over the animation we have created. Sam and I are now well on our way to completing this pod cast, however I realise we may encounter some speed bumps on the way to finishing off our animation and placing the recorded dialogue on top of it. Having said that I feel confident in the work that we have done together.

Second Meeting

This was our first opportunity to actually do some work on this assignment as myself and Sam have been busy finishing off our dissertations. Now we have sat down and taken some time to consider the options open to us, we have decided to use sustainable energy as our topic to pod cast about. Our first pod cast is about what sustainable energy is and the pros and cons that come with it. now we have completed our first pod cast we will go away and think of some more ideas to record for out next meeting on 5/5/2014.

Podcast test for science assignment with Nick, Sam and myself.

I have now finished my FINAL PIECE, and it feels great. its been a long road but I have finally got there. Initially I did not quite understand what to do for this assignment but after I threw my self into it and forgot about my concerns, I think I finally understand what to do well I hope I understood what to. Having said all the I started to really enjoy the assignment after my initial stutter at the beginning.
I was slightly worried that my final piece was not going to work on the computers in the university as I tried it in the library and to my horror it failed to work PANIC TIME! But after seeing Mandy and trying it on one of her computers it worked, so all is well.
I am very sad to say goodbye to my first year at university and Visual Communication. But I am very much looking forward to next year and I am apprehensive at what waits ahead of me.

Research Material

I have had BIG problems in deciding to what research for this project. After initial brainstorming, I decided to start to gather some ideas based around music and sport, as these are major parts of my life. After looking at sport I decided it would be hard for me come up with a final piece based on sport. So I continued to look at music, I researched many areas within music and then moved onto the area which most interested and influenced me.
Once I complete my research material, I will start to gather ideas about my final piece and how I am going to execute it.

What is Education, guest lecturer.

This in my opinion was the best guest lecturer that we have had so far this term for What is Education, and that was with Professor David Warner. I must admit I had made preconceived judgments on of how boring this lecture was going to be as Mr David Warner did not look like the most colourful person in the world. But as the old saying goes you should not read a book by its cover. I was pleasantly surprised when he opened with a cheesy yet funny joke about his appearance and after this I was hanging on to his every word.

The lecture was about Higher Education and many other aspects evolving it. What is higher education for? What do we gain from going to university or another higher education institute? Transferable skills, how can you find information for yourself rather than in than being spoon fed all the information needed by a teacher or lecturer in college. You learn how to support yourself and manage your social and professional life successfully, you learn how to argue appropriately and work as a team effectively. You will be able to draw accurate conclusions and evaluate correctly and extract the important information form a large piece of text or speech. You will also be able to increase the amount of work that you can do independently.

He then went on to talk about many areas with in higher education:

·        History of UK universities in two minutes    

·        Diversity of UK higher education

·        Recent key legislations

·        Some key trends in UK higher education

·        The future

To finish the lecture we looked closely at two controversial subjects in HE, why go to university and why student fees.

I thoroughly enjoyed this lecture and I felt that a round of applause was in order. I look forward to another lecture from Professor Warner, but Andy has been sorely missed this term and I eagerly anticipate his return in the next term or as late as next year.   

What is Education, guest lecturer.

What is Education with guest lecturer Alice Davies, who is involved with South West Wales Reaching Wider Partnership. She described Widening access (WA) as increasing opportunities for people from a diverse range of backgrounds to benefit from Higher Education (HE).

We must widen the spectrum of access in to Higher Education as social classes A B and C1 dominate HE and Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation shows that poverty persists to not gain access to universities or Higher Education.

Widening Access aims to increase the number of people from ‘under-represented’ groups in Higher Education. For example, people from black and ethnic minority groups, people with disabilities, people from low income families and the disenfranchised youth of today’s society.

Communities first looked at the WIMD (2000) – Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation, income, employment, health, education, housing and access to services. They found that there were 100 areas that were most deprived (CF areas). These areas were shown to us on a slide.

She went on to talk about HEFCW Widening Access Funding (HE Funding Council Wales). They helped people to plan their fees, people who are disabled or on low income. Reaching wider was established in 2002 by HEFCW. It was created to look after young people in deprived areas, care leavers, disabled, ethnic and welsh speakers.

There were three Regional Partnerships, North and Mid Wales, First Campus – South East and South West Wales Partnership. The members of this this partnership were, HE (leading), FE, local authorities, Careers Wales, Third Sector and Communities First. There aims were to encourage progression to higher education, assist with enhancing achievement, work with severe relative social disadvantage and focus on underrepresented communities. They strive to raise aspiration and attainment.

They have a progressive programme which stems from primary education to year 13. The programme is designed to help children make the right choices for themselves whether they want to go into Higher education or not. The programme will help boost GCSE results, attendance, retention in FE, progression to HE and impact Measurement.

Their future aim is to have Contextual admissions, more HE in FE, more part time study/distance learning and more Adult Education.

What is Education, guest lecturer.

What is Education with guest lecturer Nick Bennett, who is the Principle of Gower College. He talked to us about Further Education (FE) Policy in Wales. He showed a variety of different topics within Further education Policy. He also showed us a number of interesting facts and statistics regarding FE and his particular college.

The 1998 Reform Act is why colleges were created and they were run by the government rather than local authorities, this created a difference in the way that they are run, funded and inspected. The teaching in colleges is broadly different from that of schools. 

Further Education has two major functions, underpin social fabrication and to support the economy. Further Education was created in Wales to support the economy. FE also ensures that borrowing money for the cost of tuition fees for students in Wales remains unchanged. Further Education institutes also encourage jobs growth in Wales by offering employment opportunities or training for young people.

The Welsh Government encouraged further mergers of further education facilities. This was to create and provide further learning opportunities, enable closer collaboration and maintain our commitment to provide support for students who come from lower income households.

Everything in FE sectors are under review, everything is changing e.g. funding, courses available, fees etc. 2012 will be the year of reviews, the things that they will be looking at are: national planning and funding system, age group of 14-19 sector, HE in FE, qualifications, appropriate assessments, clear progression, modules exams taken out, no more coursework, one exam at the end of 2 years.

These are the changes that Further Education will see in the coming future.

What is Education, guest lecturer.

The guest lecturer for this session was Mike Day; who is a cabinet member for Education in Swansea. The topic for this lecture was educational policy.

He described educational policy as a straightjacket or “guidelines”. Policy is that area of guidelines for actions to achieve goals and objectives, specific aims to be achieved and desired end results. It reflects on political opinions, options, traditions, values, and socio-economic objectives. It's over a long time scale and discusses fundamental choices. Education policy is a tool for social mobility.

He then went on to discuss what education policy is (a maze of ideals and questions). He asked the question why is education policy needed, which no one was brave enough to make the leap of answering this broad minded question. Who should develop educational policy? Parents, teachers, governors, government, headship teams? In my opinion all people should be involved in the making of such policies. But Politicians elected to represent the people. They hold the 'purse strings' and are not subject experts, so crucial mistakes are inevitable.

 Where should education policy be developed and how is it developed? Another thought provoking question.

What is education for? Create a workforce; transmit values and beliefs, tool for social mobility produce 'rounded' individuals for future culture and society. Major questions that need to be answered: What should be the school compulsory age, should school be free, and should it be selective? Should be Special Education Needs (SEN) be included in mainstream education or should it be segregated?

He finished the lecture by talking about QED 2020. It was introduced to raise standards of achievement and attainment, Make best use of financial and physical resources and improve the quality of the learning environment.

Final lesson

It is our final lesson with Mandy. I have found this part of the module very interesting and it has also brought on my ICT skills in leaps and bounds, I can now make a short film, Blogg, use the internet safely when refrencing and use moodle and email successfully. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Mandy's class as she is very kind and will offer help at the drop of a hat. I look forward to moving on to the second half of the visual comms module and I hope to enjoy it as much as the first half.

Better late than never!

It's been a while bloggspot, I am affraid the christmas season took hold of me and I forgot all about you. I finished my fun packed week of placement. Although I was not able to do much of the tasks set by my lecturers I was able to gain valuable experience in a primary school enviroment. I had the pleasure of watching the school play a overwhelming ten times! Also I cut out leaves forctree costumes for six hours on my final day of placement. I was able to observe the teachers assistant doing joly phonic flash cards with the pupils in the morning before the register. The teacher did an improvised lesson betweeen the two plays which was quite good but I still was not able to see how the teacher taught the children and how she interacted with them. I am looking forward with anticipation to my second placement in year two, so I can get a better idea of how the primary school system works.

A Long Week!

Waw what a long week. I have finally started Andy's essay Waht Is Education? Could you ask a more genral question please......! well thats my rant over I feel a lot better now. I am still struggling to engage with some of the modules, I dont know whether it is the lecturer or if I just find the topic generally boring. Also I still find it hard to think of anything to write in these bloggs without sounding a little bit like for the want of a better word an ass! however I do quite liike the idea behind them and how we can "REFLECT" on our learning through the POWER of bloggspot.

"READING WEEK"

Where to start where to start?
After a long week of independant research and reading I think I finally have a small idea of where to start on Andy's essay! What is education? hmm good question. I found Sians essay rather simple but now having said that it is probably going to turn ouy to be not so good. I am slighlty more worried about the assignment set for visual comms as im not the most creative person in the world when it comes to making a project portfolio and such!But still I am confident that I will make a pretty good presentation. I have a couple of ideas brewing but still nothing solid hopefully after asking Mandy for some guidence ill be fine.

Bubble Reflection

Evaluating A Website

We decided after our group discussion that we would do our prsentation on the actor and comedian Rob Brydon. After this we then typed his name into Google and we each chose a different site to look at, I chose IMDB, Ryan chose BBC and sam chose Wikipedia. After this we discovered that we were not allowed to use IMDB or BBC so we had to go with Wikipedia. We then site coloned the website and went on from there. In hindsight we proberbly should of chosen another website due to the fact that wikipedia can be very unreliable and the whole theme of the presentation was about validity, acuracy and being able to use the internet propelry.

In The Beginning.

In the beginning I was brought into this world by my mother, I was no bigger than a bag of potatoes with chubby arms and legs. I was brought up by my parents in a large village called Gowerton, I have many fond memories from my childhood of chortling and playing with my friends. I went to Gowerton primary school and then onto the comprehensive, I also studied for my A levels there. After getting my A level results I decided to take a year but I ended up taking three. After leaving sixth from I immediately started working in a clothing store called USC, I was there for two miserable years but I was promoted to footwear manager so not all bad. I then manged to get a job in Olchfa comprehensive school as a TA, I worked there for a year and it was quite possibly the best experience of my life, I would of loved to stay there but the money is not the best. I applied for university with the hope that my experience would be enough to get me onto the Educational Studies course as I do not have the best A level results. I am currently writting this blog in my IT lesson in university so I clearly ACHIEVED MY GOAL! I am enjoying uni life and I am looking forward to the three long years ahead.
